Astro Van Conversion

An off-grid tiny home on wheels.

During my Covid-19 quarantine time, I bought a 1997 Chevy Astro Van and converted it into an off-grid campervan.

Taking advantage of quarantine.

During Covid-19 quarantine, I embarked on designing and constructing an off-grid campervan using a 1997 Chevy Astro. The electrical system is powered by solar panels and there is running water within the van. I learned a great deal in all aspects of constructing a tiny home, some of which included ergonomic and space saving solutions.

Planning the build.

Before I embarked on the task of constructing my tiny home on wheels, I needed to understand what I wanted out of the camper and within the spatial constraints.

Electrical Schematic.

Before the experiment I needed to learn a few new trades. I had very little experience with electric, especially DC power, so I read some books and spent hours on YouTube. This was also the case for plumbing.

Space Development.

I moved to CAD in order to better visualize my design. It is easier to comprehend scale in 3D.

The Build.

Here she is.

After completion, we drove the van across country to Seattle. It was quite a journey three dogs and three people, but she made it.
