A smartwatch for climbing.

Mountaineering and rock climbing are true tests of strength and endurance. New technologies allow fitness and GPS tracking to be used in the most wild places. Current activity trackers do not meet the needs of these adventurous sports.

Design Opportunities.

Rock climbing is a great way to improve fitness while also taking you to amazing places. Activity trackers would greatly benefit a climber or mountaineer, however most wearable activity trackers are both uncomfortable and dangerous for climbers to wear while climbing.

Because of the extensive use of the climbers arm, and most of their body, existing activity trackers are not appropriate for climbing.

The Brand.

Suunto is a smartwatch brand that is trusted by those who reach for the highest peaks. The products are stylish enough to wear in the city and durable enough to tackle any adventure.

CMF and Form Inspiration.

I want the watch to feel minimal and durable with simple geometry.

Ideation.

I took my inspiration for the smartwatch from compasses and pocket watches.

Not your typical smartwatch.

For the final concept, I used a velcro-like nylon strap that is attached on one side and loops though the carabiner on the other. At the end of the strap, there is a loop that allows the watch to be attached to the climbing harness via a second safety carabiner.
